Vilano Bridge Run Fundraiser

Although the 24th Annual Vilano Bridge Run was scheduled in March of this year,  due to Covid-19 the race format was converted to a "Virtual" Race. The planning of the Run by the North Shores Improvement Association (NSIA) was already complete; Medals and t-shirts had been purchased and sponsorships had been procured when the decision to go with a virtual race in lieu of in person was made due to COVID.  Those who accepted the challenge had fun completing our scavenger hunt and they submitted their times online. In return they received an additional t-shirt, medal and some surprise goodies.
NSIA would like to thank all of the sponsors who contributed to the 2020 Vilano Bridge Run:
Bob Holmquist and Charlene Garra, Realtors with Watson Realty were our Presenting Sponsors. Other sponsors included Flagler Health, The Dilbeck Clan, Vinny’s Pizza, Cap’s on the Water, Magic Beach Motel, Metro Diner, Porsche Jacksonville, Donovan Heat & Air, The Garden Produce, Fountain of Youth Spa, Serenata Beach Club and Generation Homes. Because of these sponsorships, NSIA was still able to make a donation for $5,000.00 to the Florida School of the Deaf and Blind (FSDB), making the total given over the past two years $10,000.00.
The FSDB is able to provide appropriate technology, enhanced reading programs, vocational and work-readiness services, athletics and performing arts, tutoring, academic enhancements and social responsibility and empowerment programs with the help of these funds. FSDB supports and educates nearly 1,000 children ranging in age from birth to 22 years old on campus or virtually in their homes.
NSIA, which was founded in 1939 with the mission of sustaining the quality of life in our community through education and recreation, is proud to make this contribution to the school and hope to continue to do so in the future.

Summer is here!
June 2020

Welcome to the North Shores Improvement Association website! The summer at the beach has begun and while we are enjoying our time together, we are still mindful of social distancing and keeping ourselves and our spaces virus free. The facilities were thoroughly sanitized, including tables, chairs, knobs and light switches before opening the buildings back up for classes and meetings. They will regularly be cleaned as well, however, to be careful, we ask that people utilizing the buildings wipe down anything they will touch before use and sanitize surfaces touched prior to leaving.

Community Garden

Our Community Garden is looking great and there are still a few garden plots available for rent. Click HERE or go to the Garden page on this website for more information.

Bridge Run
This year’s Vilano Bridge Run had to be cancelled, but we will still be giving $5,000 to the Florida School of the Deaf and Blind.  A drive-by T-shirt and medal  pick up day was held at the Firehouse on May 14th as well as at First Place Sports Jacksonville. We still have some of the runners shirts and medals. If you have not picked up your shirt, you can come to the Firehouse at 1301 First Street between 6 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of June or July. We will also have the shirts available at next year’s run which will be our 25th annual run. It is sure to be exciting and we look forward to seeing you there.
Check out the Rental page to see what art and fitness classes are available and to get information on renting one of our spaces for your next event.

The NSIA Community Garden is currently undergoing re-vitalization for the Spring growing season. We have a dozen beds that are open for a $60 donation for members or $120 for non-members. Each raised bed is approximately 4’ by 10’ and water is supplied. One of the beds is a community herb bed (Tisa’s Garden) for our garden members. News: Another one of our beds is going to be a “nursery” for sand oaks, which will be used to plant along the future planned “Multi-use Trail.” Additionally, we have donated a bed to the local Guardian ad Litem, a great group we are happy to support. Our next project is to use cardboard boxes to “lasagna” garden/build up empty beds for new owners. Also, we want to get our composting program up and running this February. If you are interested in having a little plot of Vilano land to garden on, please contact Jean Miller, the garden director, at [email protected].

 Multi-Use Trail
On Tuesday, January 21, 2020 the St. Johns County Commissioners approved the priority list of transportation funding projects to be submitted to the Florida DOT and the North Florida TPO for potential funding be considered for inclusion in the Fiscal Year 2024/25 of FDOT’s Work Program. The Multi-Use Path/Trail along State Road A1A (Vilano to Mickler Road) 2020 proposed ranking is No. 2. The partially completed JR2C Trail is the No. 1 St. Johns County Trail. Presently, a feasibility study pertaining to the SR A1A Trail is being conducted by the FDOT’s Sun Trail Coordinator.
