Northshore Newsletter
January 2020

Greetings from the beautiful North Shores of Florida! We have sun, sand, surf and a plethora of activities to enjoy. The North Shores Improvement Association (NSIA) has a Recreational Complex located on Meadow Avenue in Vilano, one block off A1A that includes two buildings that are available to rent plus a playground, tennis, pickle ball and basketball courts, a fenced-in dog run area, a community garden with raised beds and a large field that is perfect for outdoor events. Check out our calendar for fitness classes, art classes, book club and other activities.

The next BIG event is the Vilano Bridge 5k/10k Run that is in its 24th year. The date of this year’s run is March 21, 2020. We hope you find our communities of South Ponte Vedra down A1A to Porpoise Point a friendly place to visit and to live.

Bridge Run
The 24th Annual Vilano Bridge 5k/10k Run – Register now for the run with spectacular views of the St. Johns River, the Atlantic Ocean and historic downtown St. Augustine. The run begins at 7:30 a.m. on March 21, 2020 at 120 Meadow Avenue in Vilano. While the runners are making their way through the course which goes over the Vilano Bridge into Camachee Island and through the grounds of the Florida School of the Deaf and Blind, spectators can enjoy the Party in the Park. This year we will have live reptiles from the Alligator Farm, free donuts and coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts, free pizza courtesy of Vinny’s Pizza, a silent auction, plants for purchase and other great booths. Don’t forget that runners 21 and over can have a free beer donated by Ancient City Brewery and Dog Rose Brewery. We will also have a 50/50 raffle! The Presenting Sponsor for this year’s race is Bob Holmquist and Charlene Garra of Watson Realty. Give them a call if you are in the market to buy or sell. Proceeds will again benefit the Florida School of the Deaf and Blind who last year received a check from NSIA for $5,000! The race also raised enough funds to renovate the main room of the Firehouse.

The NSIA Community Garden is currently undergoing re-vitalization for the Spring growing season. We have a dozen beds that are open for a $60 donation for members or $120 for non-members. Each raised bed is approximately 4’ by 10’ and water is supplied. One of the beds is a community herb bed (Tisa’s Garden) for our garden members. News: Another one of our beds is going to be a “nursery” for sand oaks, which will be used to plant along the future planned “Multi-use Trail.” Additionally, we have donated a bed to the local Guardian ad Litem, a great group we are happy to support. Our next project is to use cardboard boxes to “lasagna” garden/build up empty beds for new owners. Also, we want to get our composting program up and running this February. If you are interested in having a little plot of Vilano land to garden on, please contact Jean Miller, the garden director, at [email protected].

 Multi-Use Trail
On Tuesday, January 21, 2020 the St. Johns County Commissioners approved the priority list of transportation funding projects to be submitted to the Florida DOT and the North Florida TPO for potential funding be considered for inclusion in the Fiscal Year 2024/25 of FDOT’s Work Program. The Multi-Use Path/Trail along State Road A1A (Vilano to Mickler Road) 2020 proposed ranking is No. 2. The partially completed JR2C Trail is the No. 1 St. Johns County Trail. Presently, a feasibility study pertaining to the SR A1A Trail is being conducted by the FDOT’s Sun Trail Coordinator.
